Garden Gone

The community plot is being bulldozed as the parking lot gets renovated. Home garden is gone. I'm left with forcing paperwhites, for now.

Eastern North Carolina Farm Tour

Upon finishing coffee, I contemplated strolling through the local garden store, then I remembered: 21 & 22 Sep 2013 is the weekend of the farm tour. Quick alteration from retail to wide open rolling hills on the first weekend of the autumn equinox.

Rain This Summer

Great for green pepper harvests. Zero tomatoes. The great raised bed with its trellis had to be moved, but there's a promise of fall and winter gardening.

Cauliflower

Size of a tennis ball. Beneficiary of low sun now climbing higher in the sky. Raised bed probably means shallow root depth.

Peas!

Work day Saturday went well, sunny, chilly, breezy. The garden plot may stay where it is; the move discussed last year never jelled. While cleaning up the raised beds, I moved mulch to the side and noticed peas finally sprouted, tiny green curls and spears, stabbing and battling toward the sky!

Winter Plant Census

Visited Plot #1 in preparation for the move 01March2013. Noticed one cauliflower bud the size of a marble. Pulled two slim green onions, the smell of salad and spring.

Plot #1 Is Moving!

The Whole Foods staff have decided to relocate all garden plots. 02Mar2013 is the work day for the move. Have already requested a plot in full sun! Must dismantle trellis, netting, all soil, all boards, and relocate. Location TBD.

What 60-40-20 Degree Weather Means

Saturday from 9 am until about 3 pm, continuous snow in North Carolina. At times, inch wide snowflakes fell. Was outside from 9-10 am and saw the rain change to flakes, people in a steady festive mood. Then snow changed to inch wide flakes. By afternoon, snow tapered to determined flurries. While running errands, I noticed behind the bergamot, the smallest daffodils pushed through their yellow hello.

The Early Peas

Checked 10Feb2013. No sign they have sprouted. Onions growing uneventfully and harvested one. The cabbage is dormant.

Ice Skoting

12 noon Ice melted.

8 am Play on words for ice coating. The blaze rose is bent over with skoting. After saying good-bye to cabin fever, I walked until coming to a steep slope; immediately sat down to avoid falling down, and road my rear back to level ground. A quarter inch of ice, on a slope, is too slick for traction. Looking forward to 40 degree temperatures this afternoon.

Daffodil Spears! 18Jan2013

Green spears about 3-4" long, piercing through the SBUX coffee ground compost. Last year, they were up on Christmas Day.

Planted 13Jan13

Planted half a packer of peas in plot #1. Will now need to fence in the plot to twart rabbits and other creatures. Have easter egg radishes and micro lettuces that will need sowing soon.

Autumn Leaves Gone

For two months, the home garden plot was covered with autumn leaves. This week autumn leaves have been removed, exposing SBUX coffee grounds scattered for compost. Last year, at 25Dec2011, the first daffodil blades were pushing green spears toward blue sky. Need to look for this year.

Plot #1

Deciding to plant this weekend. Peas most likely to see if they grow up the tellis. Neighbor has graceful green guard around another plot. Seems to keep out visitors.
